Abstract

The paper considers the analysis of basic scientific concepts and terms that characterize stressed rock massif as the main object of geomechanical researches. Normative definitions of the main terms of practical geomechanics are considered as an interconnected system. They include the following terms: rock formation, massif of rocks, rock mass, structure reduktion coefficient, representative volume, structural blocks, parting, stressed and strained state, mechanical stress field, structural stress, texture stress, deformation field, rock breaking, rock pressure, limit state. Strength characteristics of rocks used in geomechanics, such as: strength of rocks, long- and short-term strength of rock, decrease component, limit and overlimited deformation are compared with similar normative definitions used in geotechnology, such as: contact strength, toughness, hardness, crushability. The principal incorrectness of estimating of mechanical properties and stress-strain state of a specific point in the rock massif without taking into account the spatial and temporal scales of the ussued object, and scales of its interaction with the environment, is being substantiated. The expediency of unification and reduction of concepts and terms to a common terminological system for geomechanics and geotechnology is shown by the paper.
