Abstract

The paper considers one of the effective ways to solve an actual problem related to protecting open mining operations from rockfalls. Various engineering protection methods can be used to prevent these negative events on open pits. However, modern anti-roсkfall protection construction aproach is based on technologies that do not provide subsequent dismantling, and therefore, their use is limited by the contours of the corresponding open pit. It also should be noted that the
generally accepted approaches to the design of antiroсkfall systems need to be improved in the reference to the conditions of exploited open pits in order to comprehensively solving the task of ensuring the safety of different objects. In order to improve industrial safety in hard rock massifs, methods have first been developed to ensure reliable protection of people and mining
equipment during important activities near slopes on the current contours of the open pits. The developed methods involve the design of temporary anti-rockfall protection facilities on the basis of demountable load-bearing structures consisting of anchors or micropiles and cover meshes, with the possibility of their subsequent dismantling. The type and design of protective
facilities are selected taking into account the characteristics of an open pit being developed and the rockfall parameters. The facilities are constructed mainly mechanically, using construction equipment. The effectiveness of the developed methods has been confirmed experimentally on an iron open pit, operated by Kovdorsky MPS, during manual scaling of slopes, and by
R&D works conducted in an intensive rockfall zone. The implemented engineering and technical solutions are recommended to be included in the regulations for open pits.
