Abstract

The results of theoretical studies on the effect of high-pressure injection of clay-cement grout in the hydraulic fracturing mode on the shear strength of dispersed sandy-clayey soils are presented. A structural model of dispersed soil with coagulation contacts is considered, in which the shear strength is governed by the combined effect of cementation bonds and interparticle contact interaction forces, depending on the number of interparticle contacts per unit shear area and the average shear resistance of an individual contact. Based on the analysis of coagulation structural bonds, a physical and mathematical model describing the changes in soil strength characteristics has been developed. It has been established that high-pressure grout injection induces the breakdown of initial cementation bonds, the rearrangement of structural elements, additional soil compaction, and the formation of new interparticle contacts. It is shown that during high-pressure injection, the clay-cement grout does not penetrate the interparticle pore space, but rather forms hydraulic fracture channels, generating soil compaction stress. Analytical relationships have been derived to determine the internal friction coefficient, soil compaction factor, and the overall strengthening factor of the soil mass, taking into account reinforcement by injected elements. The overall soil strengthening factor is defined as the product of the soil compaction factor and the clay-cement grout reinforcement factor. Theoretical conclusions are corroborated by data from commercial trial operations on high-pressure grouting of unstable loams: the internal friction coefficient increased from 0.33 to 0.41, and the overall strengthening factor reached 3.0–3.2.
